LOCAL MP VISITS UK’S LARGEST TRAIN OPERATOR

York Central MP, Hugh Bayley visited the UK’s largest train operator, Northern Rail to meet managing director, Ian Bevan.  The visit follows the recent announcement that the company has achieved a two year extension to its franchise, meaning it will operate services across the north of England until at least September 2013.

Ian talked to Hugh about Northern’s achievements to date and also what the franchise extension will mean for Northern’s passengers in and around York.

Hugh also took the opportunity to realise most childhood dreams when he took the driving seat of one of Northern’s trains.

Ian Bevan, Managing Director, Northern Rail said: “I was delighted to meet Hugh today and to talk about the improvements we have delivered for rail passengers across the north of England since we began operating in 2004.  We look forward to working with Hugh and our other partners to deliver even more for our passengers over the next three years.”

Hugh Bayley MP said: “Northern Rail has done really well to turn the franchise into the success story that it is today.  I am pleased that the company has been given a two-year extension, which will see the franchise run until September 2013.  Northern Rail has invested over £100 million along with its partners and it has been able to provide more trains.  It has also provided newer trains, which means that journeys are more comfortable and there are improvements to facilities.

“The improvements to the timetable and to the quality of the service will benefit rail passengers and encourage more people to travel to York.”
